What is IAHR?


The International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research

IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to hydraulics and its practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics and continuing education and training. IAHR stimulates and promotes both research and it's application, and by so doing strives to contribute to sustainable development, the optimisation of world water resources management and industrial flow processes. IAHR accomplishes its goals by a wide variety of member activities including: working groups, research agenda, congresses, specialty conferences, workshops and short courses; Journals, Monographs and Proceedings; by involvement in international programmes such as UNESCO, WMO, IDNDR, GWP, ICSU, The World Water Council; and by co-operation with other water-related (inter)national organisations.

IAHR publishes two international scientific journals from its headquarters in Madrid, Spain – the Journal of Hydraulic Research, and the Journal of River Basin Management. It also publishes a bi-monthly Newsletter, a monthly eNewsletter

IAHR has regional divisions in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. IAHR has currently seventeen technical Committees grouped in three Divisions.

Journal of River Basin Management. Published in four issues per year in print and electronic format, and is co-published by IAHR with IAHS and INBO. The Journal plays a specific role in promoting a cross-sectorial approach encompassing all aspects of river and floodplain management, with a truly global perspective.
